With the onset of the rainy season, it is time to divide and replant our Cymbopogon flexuosus. This is not an easy job and requires digging up the old plants, splitting them into 4-5 new plants, opening a new hole, and replanting each of the splits. It seems straightforward until you do it for 30,000 plants and realize that Lemongrass is sharp enough to cut anyone without the toughest hands!
Within 3-4 months each of these splits will have filled in the space between them and be ready for harvest. We will continue to aggressively expand the amount of Lemongrass we have in cultivation for the next year or two. Currently we sell fresh grass to a local partner that makes a Lemongrass Ice Tea (which is fantastic!) and we will begin distilling pure Lemongrass oil at Finca Chocolat later this year for both local and export sale.
If you come for a visit be sure to ask us for a taste – Lemongrass is great fresh out of the fields. The picture above is a full-size plant and the image below are newly planted splits.
